The New Apartment! A Little Tour...
We moved into our new place in February of 2000, and I've only just now gotten
around to taking pictures. (Time flies when you're having a baby!) This apartment
is really more of a townhouse, and has a lot more in the way of amenities, square
footage, rooms, etc., as you will see. (Note: these pictures were taken when
Stephen was about 8 months old -- I need to take new ones soon, as it's been
almost three years, and a lot has changed.)
- We'll start on the 3rd floor, because that's where I started taking pictures.
The third floor is a charming room with slanted
ceilings, because it is built just under the roof. It has two closets
(yea, closet space!) and a skylight, which is covered with the season's first
snow in these pictures. Previous tenants have used this room as a bedroom,
but for us, it is the computer
room/office, craft room, and sewing
center. The view from the street-facing
window is quite nice, especially around sunset. (You can see the day care
center across the street in this photo.) Please note Stephen being exceptionally
cute playing with his toys on the floor.
- Down the stairs to the second floor.
Watch your step at the bottom; when Stephen was 4 weeks old, I sprained my
ankle by missing the last riser and was laid up for a week! (A whole lot of
no fun with an infant, let me tell you!)
- At the foot of the stairs, there is a hallway.
To your right, the library/guest room, seen from
the door and from the corner.
Please note Stephen being exceptionally cute, lying back on the bed (he was
sitting up, but fell over).
- Going down the hallway to the left, you first encounter the second-floor
bathroom. (There is another 1/2
bath on the first floor as well.) It's not as big as the bathroom in the old
place, but the shower never set off the fire alarm here and we have a linen
closet in the hallway for all the stuff that used to live in the bathroom,
which is nice.
- Back into the hallway, down a few more paces, and you come to the master
bedroom. Pictures here are taken from
the door, from the changing
table, and from the street-facing
window. Please note Stephen being exceptionally cute, sitting up on the
bed.
- As you exit the bedroom, you see the hallway
from the other end. Just across from the linen closet is the stairway
to the first floor.
- The living room is seen here
from the stairway landing. (Funny story about those stairs: when we moved
in, the landlord never mentioned that the stairway was not big enough to accommodate
a queen-sized mattress box! We tried for about an hour to get it up the stairs,
and finally our friend Rob helped us saw the box in half so we could
fit it up the stairs, and we reassembled it in the bedroom so that it can
be taken apart again when we move. That added about 5 hours to the move...
thankfully, the walls are well-enough insulated that our neighbors didn't
hear us drilling and hammering at 12 am!) Other views are from
the front door, from the big
comfy couch, and from the hutch.
It's really, really nice to have a separate living room! Here is a view
to the parking lot (covered with snow) from the front door.
- From the living room, you can enter the dining
room. (Imagine, a room just for eating!) The dining room also has a small
pantry attached, which is great -- no more storing things in the living room
(as in the old place). My concession to the holiday season, a little solstice
bush, sits on the dining room table. Here is a view
to the back yard (such as it is, a brick patio) from the back door.
- You enter the kitchen from the
dining room. It's got a nice big stove, a nice new refrigerator, a wonderful
garbage disposal in the sink (great if you don't have room for compost!),
and best of all, a dishwasher (we only run it maybe twice a week, but it's
terrific to have when we have family get-togethers). There is a bathroom attached
to the kitchen, but it's just a little 1/2 bath, so I didn't take a picture
of it. Because we are the end unit, we have extra windows; this one in the
kitchen is like a wee greenhouse!
Too bad I still have a black thumb...
- Leaving the kitchen into the dining room again, you can see the stairs
down to the basement. The basement
itself is completely unfinished and a total mess because of my siblings,
I am now the only one with good storage space, so we are keeping stuff from
my brother. However, we only go down there to do laundry (yea -- onsite laundry!!!)
so it's okay.
- When spring came last year, after we had first moved in, I took a few pictures
of the place from the outside. The landlord has done a wonderful job with
the landscaping, so there are always flowers and lovely groundcover. There
are four views, so you get an idea of how tall and narrow the unit is. It's
one of six units, each with a footprint of about 15' by 25'. View
one, view two, view
three, view four.
- Hope you enjoyed this little tour!
